June 2008 NEGDon’t miss the JuneBug Festival of Music happening all weekend at the Contented Cow!

Thursday’s happenings begin at 11 a.m. with Golf-a-Palooza at the Willingers Golf Club. ChARTdonnay will take place at the ArtOnWater Gallery from 5-8 p.m. Young People’s Theater is performing at 5:30 p.m. at Artech. The Rueb ‘N’ Stein is hosting Tom Franek from 6-8:30 p.m. The Northfield Community Band is doing a free concert at 7 p.m. on Bridge Square. There is an Art Opening Reception at the Northfield Arts Guild from 7-9 p.m. You can hear Teague Alexy at the Tavern Lounge.

Weekend Happenings (June 19-22, 2008)

June 2008 Neg-3 It’s Carleton Alumni weekend so we have a lot of visitors and a full menu of happenings to enjoy!

Start your weekend on Thursday with Taste of Northfield, 5-11 p.m. The Northfield Community Band kicks off the music at 6 p.m. on Bridge Square. ChARTdonnay Thursday is happening from 5-8 p.m. at ArtOnWater gallery. Singer/pianist Tom Franek is at the Rueb ‘N’ Stein from 6-8:30 p.m., and Mark Mraz at The Tavern Lounge. Study Hall with Peter and Terry will be at The Contented Cow from 7:30-10 p.m.

On Friday Tom Franek is playing at Hogan Brothers from 7-9 p.m. Katie Harris and Baker London are playing The Contented Cow, and Jeff Ray is playing The Tavern Lounge.

June 2008 NEG Start your weekend out tonight, Friday, at the official opening of “Shots” at ArtOnWater, 5-8 p.m. Kim Bloom plays guitar at the HideAway 7-9. The Over and Back Band is celebrating their first CD release with a special 7 p.m. concert at the Northfield Middle School Auditorium ($15 in advance, $20 at the door), John Wills and Trace Remington are back-to-back at the Cow and Norwegian Cowboy will be playing the Tavern Lounge.

Saturday hosts a repeat performance of Over and Back at the Middle School again at 7 p.m., Kim Bloom returns to the HideAway 7-9, NAG hosts a Forcefield Community Cabaret at 7:30 at the NAG Theater, Blue Moon rocks the Cow later that evening and Kevin Stanke will play the Tavern.

May 2008 NegJune 2008 NEG It's a cross-over weekend taking us from May into June - duo guides! Go to www.northfieldguide.com and you can digitally flip through both the May and June issues. Here are some highlights for the weekend of May 30-June 1.

On Friday, Kim Bloom plays the HideAway, 7-9 p.m. and the Norwegian Cowboy plays the Cow. At 8 p.m. there's a spring dance performance at the Arena Theater, Carleton campus.

Saturday finds Kim Bloom again at the HideAway, Bonnie and the Clydes at the Cow and Blue Sky Divide at the Tavern Lounge. The Semaphore Repertory repeats their spring dance performance at Carleton at 8 p.m.

Sunday, head to the Contented Cow at 6 p.m. for Politics and a Pint and stick around past 7:30 for the Northern Roots Music Jam Session. Once again, either go to our website or pick up a print copy of the Northfield Entertainment Guide at hot spots around town or in one of the gray boxes along the sidewalks of downtown Northfield. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!

Friday, May 23, It's Memorial Day Weekend – I'm sure you have many things planned, but if you're looking for things to do, you've come to the right spot! At 12 p.m., be sure to take part in the Empty Bowls Fundraiser at Carleton's Bald Spot. Make a $10 donation and get a handmade bowl made of homemade soup! It's a perfect combination! Find Kim Bloom's acoustical guitar tunes at The HideAway from 7 to 9 p.m. The Carleton Symphony Band headed by Ronald Rodman performs at 8 p.m. at Carleton's Concert Hall and St. Olaf's Orchestra Concert performs at Skoglund Auditorium at 8 p.m. under the direction of Stephen Amundson. Area venues host entertaining acts including Marty Anderson and the Goods at The Contented Cow and After October at The Tavern Lounge.

Thursday, Check out ChARTdonnay Thursday at ArtOnWater Gallery from 5 to 8 p.m. Here you can take in the latest exhibit "Medicine Dream Journeys" featuring paintings and drawings by Annette Lee and William Wilson. From 7 to 9 p.m., make your way to The Grand Event Center for the Northfield Wine Club Tasting event. Enjoy and learn more about wines while hobnobbing with other wine lovers. Be sure to step out for the Northfield Historical Society's event, "The History of Memorial Day and the Significance of the World War I Poppy," at 7 p.m. The presentation takes a look at the origin of Memorial Day including the historical significance of the Poppy and Flanders Field. This event is free for all history buffs. The Northfield High School Orchestra performs its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Middle School Auditorium. Also, check out the Bluegrass and Old-time Jam Session from 7:30 to 10 p.m at The Contented Cow, and local favorites, Mr. Sticky, will perform at The Tavern Lounge.

Thursday, ArtOnWater Gallery hosts its exhibition closing of three big exhibits: "2008 Rochester Art in the Sky," "The Twenty Views of Dundas," and "The 1000 Print Summer." If you haven't seen this phenomenal exhibit – be sure to stop down between 3 to 8 p.m. Also this evening, be sure to stop by Bridge Square at 6 p.m. for the Sesquicentennial Banner Presentation in celebration of Minnesota's 150th birthday! The banner has made its way through every county in the state and Northfield is the last stop on the way to St. Paul. The James Gang rides once again to present the banner! For musical enjoyment, stop by The Tavern Lounge to see Mark Mraz and The Contented Cow to catch Study Hall with Terry and Peter.

Thursday, This evening there's a host of events that will stimulate your mind! Start off with ChARTdonnay Thursday at ArtOnWater Gallery from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sip wine while viewing and purchasing art by local talent, Jill Enestvedt. Her works are inspired by the patchwork nature of quilts ... just gorgeous! For the literary kind, be sure to take in the author event at 5 p.m. at Carleton's Gould Library Anthenaeum featuring the book by Robert and Carol Curoe, "Are There Closets in Heaven?" – a story of the relationship between a Catholic father and his lesbian daughter. At 7 p.m., Monkey See Monkey Read is hosting an author event at 7 p.m. Tom Swift, author of "Chief Bender's Burden: The Silent Struggle of a Baseball Star," will read from his newly-released book and sign copies. Afterwards, be sure to catch Ian Alexy at The Tavern Lounge!

Inside find all the details about The Northfield Home Tour presented by five area home builders including: Schmidt Homes, Olson Brothers Construction, Northfield Construction Company, F&G Builders and College City Homes. This big event takes place over the course of two weekends ... April 12-13 and 19-20.

Look inside this issue of the Real Estate Guide for all the information and find a handy booklet that describes the event and includes a map of the homes on the tour. Be sure to participate to check out these beautiful homes and attend the informative seminars. Also, Michele Merxbauer of the Northfield Housing and Redevelopment Authority tells us more about the land being purchased to offer affordable housing locally. Thursday, Tonight's the night for great art, mingling and sipping wine! Be sure to stop in at ArtOnWater Gallery for the art preview of Jill Enestvedt's artistic work. Enestvedt's work is mixed media including acrylic paint and collage work that's inspired by quilts. After the art show, find great music at these venues: Bluegrass and Old-time Jam Session at The Contented Cow, Guest Recital featuring Deanne Mohr and Eric Brisson, piano, at St. Olaf's Urness Recital Hall and Todd Thompson at The Tavern Lounge.

Friday: Winter is nearing an end, but ArtOrg continues with its Winter Concert Series with Howard "Guitar" Luedtke and Blue Max – one of the most versatile bands around! After the set at the Rueb, these talents will head over to The Contented Cow at 11:30 p.m. to finish off the evening. Find the Key West Rejects at Froggy Bottoms at 9 p.m. They'll play favorites including Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Neil Diamond, Foo Fighters and Buck Cherry. Marty Anderson and the Goods entertain at The Tavern Lounge with acoustic, electric, classic rock and country alternative.
