Aquila Theatre's Iliad at Carleton College
Hailed by the New York Times as "a performance of staggering power," Aquila Theatre Company's stage adaptation of Homer's Iliad is coming to Northfield on Friday, October 17. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Concert Hall on the campus of Carleton College. The event is free and open to the public.
Aquila's acclaimed production, directed by artistic director Peter Meineck, follows the main action of Book One of Homer's epic. The Greek army is in the ninth year of its seige of Troy when a dispute arises between Agamemnon, the Greek commander, and Achilles, the Greeks' greatest warrior. As the two heroes engage in a power struggle over honor and the spoils of war, the fate of the Greek army hangs in the balance. Backstage magazine raved: "If you see only one piece of theater this year—see Aquila's Iliad."
Aquila Theatre Company was founded in London in 1991 and is now based in New York City. This unique Northfield performance is sponsored by the Carleton College Department of Classics, the Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching, the Department of English, the Committee for Studies in the Arts, and the Humanities Center, with major funding from the Mellon Faculty Life Cycles grant.
The Concert Hall is located on First Street, between Winona and Nevada Streets, in Northfield. For a map of the campus, click here. For more information on the performance, visit the Carleton event listing online, or call Jean Sherwin at (507) 222-5437.
