Carleton Students Host Northfield Mayoral Campaign Forum
Amid the turmoil of this year’s national elections, Carleton students have not forgotten local politics. On Tuesday, October 7, Northfield mayoral candidates Paul Hager and Mary Rossing will take part in a public forum at Carleton College. Hosted by the Carleton Democrats, the forum will begin at 7 p.m. in Severance Great Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
A Northfield native, Paul Hager is Carleton College’s Technical Director of Cinema and Media Studies and the director of NTV, Northfield’s public access radio station. He is currently a member of the School Board. Hager served as Mayor of Northfield for one term from 1995 to 1998, and has also served as a City Council member.
Mary Rossing, an alumnus of St. Olaf College, is the owner of Present Perfect, a well-known Northfield gift shop. She also serves as the current president of the Northfield Downtown Development Corporation (NDDC), on the Board of Directors for the Northfield Chamber of Commerce, and on the Mayor’s Streetscape Taskforce. An active volunteer in the Northfield community, she is the former president of the Northfield Historical Society Board of Directors.

How long will this event go for?
The 2nd Presidential debate starts at 8:00 on the same night.
Will there be any other Mayoral forums this campaign season?
tonight's forum
My understanding is that the Carleton forum will be finished by 7:50pm so the audience can shift to the presidential debates at 8:00. There are more forums scheduled, including those with additional candidates. They are listed on my web site: www.maryrossing.com
wouldn't mary rossing be an
wouldn't mary rossing be an alumna of st olaf rather than an alumnus, unless she has changed gender since graduation?
Yes, but...
The former Latin student in me objects to it, but Carleton's publications and media relations folks (such as this story's author) use the term "alumnus" to refer to graduates of both genders.
Alumnus, -a, -um
The correct Latin neuter form (neuter is by definition gender neutral) would be "alumnum." Unfortunately, there is no neuter noun "alumnum," but I suppose you could construe it as a substantive form of the adjective "alumnus, -a, -um."
Saying "graduate," as Doug does in his comment, would solve the problem.
Alumni
The problem with using "graduates" is that it does not cover people who attended a school but did not graduate. Those people are also considered "alumni."
Holy cow, I had no idea
Holy cow, I had no idea Carleton had abandoned "alumna" in favor of an "all-inclusive" "alumnus." On the theory that the high-falutin gender thing was just too much, I guess? Next it will just be "people what done gone here."
