Steamroller Print
WeismanThe ArtOrg project named "The Northfield Day of the Dead Steamroller Prints" has been accepted into the permanent collection of the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota. Thanks to everyone involved in the creation of this wonderful project! We have arranged a reception to honor the artists and their contributions on Thursday, January 3 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Weisman Museum. There will be a short program at 7:30 pm. The 104-foot-long version of the project will be on display. Located on the east bank of the Mississippi River in a distinctive stainless-steel structure, the Weisman can easily be located on the attached map.

 How many clothes do we really need? This class will help you think about clothes, how to create a make-do wardrobe, how and where to shop, and how to sew and repair our own cloths. The goal of this class is to help folks consume less and make-do with what we have. Taught by Olivia Frey.

Andrea EenAndrea Een and John Jensen, music faculty members at St. Olaf College, will present a recital of music by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev on Sunday, January 13, 2008 at 2 p.m. in Christiansen Hall of Music’s Urness Recital Hall on the St. Olaf College campus. The program will span Prokofiev’s compositions from the 1920s to the late 1940s. The recital is free and open to the public.

palestine A photographic tour of Palestine's West Bank will be presented by Northfield resident Bill McGrath at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the conference hall of the Archer House in downtown Northfield.

McGrath spent 28 days last summer living with an Arab family, learning the language, working as a journalist and walking around in Bethlehem, Jenin, Nablus, Ramallah, Jerusalem, Jericho, Hebron and the Negev Desert of southern Israel.

Women in Northfield Giving Support (WINGS), a Northfield philanthropic organization, will be holding its annual meeting this Saturday, January 26, at 9 a.m. Members, guests and the public are invited to attend the meeting, which will be held at Community Resource Bank, 1605 Heritage Drive, in the Community Room.

One of the meeting highlights will be featured speaker Sarah Swan McDonald. She is a Northfield High School social studies teacher who leads the service learning initiative there. Sarah teaches the service learning class and is also a WINGS 2007 grant recipient for a program that links community service and academic learning.

to china and back The Northfield Rotary Club and the Northfield Public Schools Community Services Division are proud to present a Chinese New Year Celebration featuring world-renowned pipa soloist Ms. Gao Hong.

Residents are invited “To China and Back” on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at the Northfield Middle School. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. In addition to Gao Hong, who the Los Angeles Times described as “a captivating presence on the pipa,” the event features the Chinese American Association of Minnesota Chinese Dance Theater and the Northfield High School Chinese Choir. Will Healy will serve as emcee; food and souvenirs will be sold.

NVC Logo The Northfield Volleyball Club is a non-profit organization to promote volleyball to all Northfield and area youth. We are sponsoring a Pancake Breakfast this Sunday, Jan 27 from 8-12:30 at the Eagle's Club, 304 South Water Street, and would like to invite everyone to come.

ManZoneIt’s a free educational and entertainment event in Northfield! It will be held on Friday, February 1, 2008 from 5-9 pm at the Community Resource Bank on Hwy 3 in Northfield. This event is called the ManZone and it is for men—and the women who love them.

The education part of the edutainment event, hosted by the Community Resource Bank, will include health screenings and information about heart health, prostate health, spinal health, dental health, sexual health, financial health, smoking cessation, sleep apnea, bulging waistlines and raising healthy boys and much, much more.

The Wapsipinicon, lead by frontman Shawn Neary, will headline the concert that runs from 7:00 to 11:00 pm this Friday at the Upstairs of the J. Grundy's Reub 'N' Stein. Dreamland Faces will open the show slowly with an accordion and singing saw duo. The popular Scott West of Cloud Cult will create a stage painting during the evening and it will be sold to the highest bidder!

Groundhog Day "Just say NO to groundhogs!"

That's the rallying cry of the organizers of Northfield's first annual "Defeat of Groundhog Day" celebration, which takes place Friday, February 1.

No longer content to have the length of our longest season determined by an oversized rat, one local band is taking a stand on the eve of the controversial American holiday known as Groundhog Day.

Matt Arthur and the Bratlanders will put their musical muscle behind an effort to prevent the rotund rodent from making its annual February 2nd prediction as to whether or not another six weeks of winter is in store.

daddy daughter danceThere isn’t a dad around who doesn’t think of his daughter as his little sweetheart. And now there’s a fun way for fathers to celebrate that special relationship.

The Northfield Area Family YMCA is hosting its first Daddy Daughter Dance, from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, February 2, at the Armory. The evening will include dancing, dance lessons, refreshments, pictures, door prizes and a chance to learn more about other YMCA activities and programs throughout the year. Admission is $20 per couple, with a $5 charge for each additional child, for Y members. Non-members pay $26 per couple and $8 for each additional child. Participants are encouraged to make reservations online at www.northfieldymca.org. Tickets also may be purchased at the door.
