Women in Northfield Giving Support (WINGS), a Northfield philanthropic organization, will be holding its annual meeting this Saturday, January 26, at 9 a.m. Members, guests and the public are invited to attend the meeting, which will be held at Community Resource Bank, 1605 Heritage Drive, in the Community Room.
One of the meeting highlights will be featured speaker Sarah Swan McDonald. She is a Northfield High School social studies teacher who leads the service learning initiative there. Sarah teaches the service learning class and is also a WINGS 2007 grant recipient for a program that links community service and academic learning.
Rotary fundraiser features pipa soloist Gao Hong
The Northfield Rotary Club and the Northfield Public Schools Community Services Division are proud to present a Chinese New Year Celebration featuring world-renowned pipa soloist Ms. Gao Hong.
Residents are invited “To China and Back” on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at the Northfield Middle School. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. In addition to Gao Hong, who the Los Angeles Times described as “a captivating presence on the pipa,” the event features the Chinese American Association of Minnesota Chinese Dance Theater and the Northfield High School Chinese Choir. Will Healy will serve as emcee; food and souvenirs will be sold.
The Northfield Volleyball Club is a non-profit organization to promote volleyball to all Northfield and area youth. We are sponsoring a Pancake Breakfast this Sunday, Jan 27 from 8-12:30 at the Eagle's Club, 304 South Water Street, and would like to invite everyone to come.
Adult tickets which can be bought at the door are $5.00 and youth (10 and under) are $3.00. This club has over 60 kids participating in our program presently ranging from 5th through 12th grades.

Open Door Nursery School will host an open house for prospective families on Tuesday, January 29th at 7pm. It’s a free educational and entertainment event in Northfield! It will be held on Friday, February 1, 2008 from 5-9 pm at the Community Resource Bank on Hwy 3 in Northfield. This event is called the ManZone and it is for men—and the women who love them.
The education part of the edutainment event, hosted by the Community Resource Bank, will include health screenings and information about heart health, prostate health, spinal health, dental health, sexual health, financial health, smoking cessation, sleep apnea, bulging waistlines and raising healthy boys and much, much more.
In possibly the most exciting concert so far in the ArtOrg 12-week Winter Concert Series, The Wapsipinicon will be joined by the band Dreamland Faces. The Wapsipinicon, lead by frontman Shawn Neary, will headline the concert that runs from 7:00 to 11:00 pm this Friday at the Upstairs of the J. Grundy's Reub 'N' Stein. Dreamland Faces will open the show slowly with an accordion and singing saw duo. The popular Scott West of Cloud Cult will create a stage painting during the evening and it will be sold to the highest bidder!

"Just say NO to groundhogs!"
That's the rallying cry of the organizers of Northfield's first annual "Defeat of Groundhog Day" celebration, which takes place Friday, February 1.
No longer content to have the length of our longest season determined by an oversized rat, one local band is taking a stand on the eve of the controversial American holiday known as Groundhog Day.
Matt Arthur and the Bratlanders will put their musical muscle behind an effort to prevent the rotund rodent from making its annual February 2nd prediction as to whether or not another six weeks of winter is in store.
There isn’t a dad around who doesn’t think of his daughter as his little sweetheart. And now there’s a fun way for fathers to celebrate that special relationship.
The Northfield Area Family YMCA is hosting its first Daddy Daughter Dance, from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, February 2, at the Armory. The evening will include dancing, dance lessons, refreshments, pictures, door prizes and a chance to learn more about other YMCA activities and programs throughout the year. Admission is $20 per couple, with a $5 charge for each additional child, for Y members. Non-members pay $26 per couple and $8 for each additional child. Participants are encouraged to make reservations online at www.northfieldymca.org. Tickets also may be purchased at the door.

With the party caucuses coming this Tuesday (5th Feb), we ought to firm up our thoughts on the question of whom to support at those caucuses. Politics and a Pint at the Contented Cow will be visiting the MPR Select a Candidate website, answering the questions from the viewpoint of the Republicans and the Democrats (played by volunteers in the audience, with the vocal support of their supporting caucuses). We may even play a neutral party picking the single best consensus answer (how willing to work together is Northfield?).
Northfield community members of all ages who enjoy playing tennis are invited to attend the Northfield Tennis Association meeting on Monday, February 4, 2008. The meeting will be held from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in room SS106 of the Northfield Community Resource Center (1651 Jefferson Parkway).
The meeting is open to those of all ages and tennis ability levels. The primary focus of the meeting will be to discuss the Northfield Tennis Association’s main activities in 2008 and to gear up for spring/summer tennis efforts.

A wonderful result of the ArtOrg twelve-week Winter Concert Series is we get to know some great local and regional musicians much better. This is certainly the case of Peter Diggins. The more we hear his music, the more respect his talent, his musical journey, and Peter himself. Co-signers of the Minnesota Health Care Act will discuss the legislation at a Town Hall Meeting Saturday, Febrary 9th at 2:00 p.m. at the Northfield Public Library Meeting Room. Rep. David Bly will host the discussion. Senator John Marty, an author of the proposal said, "Our legislative proposals are designed to put us on a path toward guaranteed health care that can't be taken away."
The Northfield event is the culmination of a three-day tour legislators are making to Duluth, Hibbing, Brainerd, Mankato and Winona. The public is urged to attend. For more information contact Jane McWilliams, 507/645-8423.

“The Girls,” four talented women whose harmonic blend and unique vocal styling breathes new life into jazz tunes, ballads and R&B standards, will perform in concert on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the First United Church of Christ “Congregational” Church, 300 Union in Northfield.
Lori Dokken, Judi Donaghy, Erin Schwab and special guest, Debbie Duncan, are familiar faces and voices on the Twin Cities music scene Their tight, four-part harmony has been delighting Twin Cities’ audiences for the past six years.
Cannon Valley Youth Orchestra Will Present Winter Concert on February 10th
The Cannon Valley Youth Orchestra will perform its winter concert on Sunday, February 10th at 6:30 P.M. at Emmaus Baptist Church in Northfield. A reception will follow the concert. The Haydn and Mozart Orchestras will play under the baton of Jennifer Arco. This event is free and open to the public.

Founded in 1912 and internationally recognized as a creative force behind the a cappella choral tradition, the St. Olaf Choir and conductor Anton Armstrong '78 celebrated the ensemble's heritage during their recent 11-city West Coast Tour. The ensemble will end this year's tour with a concert in Boe Memorial at St. Olaf College Sunday, Feb. 17, at 3:30 p.m.
Note that seating for the event will be limited, but the concert can be viewed and heard live at stolaf.edu.

Griffith is most famous," says Diana Postlethwaite, who currently holds the Boldt Chair for the Humanities at St. Olaf, "The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916), are grand epic symphonies of images and emotions, Broken Blossoms (1919) is a lyric piece of chamber music."
Broken Blossoms (90 minutes, starring Lillian Gish, at left), the second film of the St. Olaf Classic American Film Festival, will be shown Monday, Feb. 18, in Viking Theater of Buntrock Commons. This screening -- like all of the festival's offerings -- are free and open to the public.
If you missed going to the Health Care Forum that happened Saturday Feb. 9, NTV will be rebroadcasting on Tuesday the 19th.

A lunar eclipse will turn the Moon red Wednesday night, Feb. 20. The event, which occurs when the Moon enters the Earth's shadow, is easily visible to the naked eye. Carleton College's Goodsell Observatory will also open its telescopes for views of the eclipse from 8-10:30 PM. The partial phase begins at 7:43; and totality is from 9:01 to 9:51. Dress warmly as the telescope domes are not heated! The open house will be cancelled if it is cloudy.

Edith Widder, biologist, deep-sea explorer, and specialist in bioluminescence, will speak about her innovative research on Friday, Feb. 22 at 10:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel at Carleton College. Entitled “New Technologies to Discover Our World,” her presentation will combine her expertise in deep-sea research and technological innovation along with her commitment to reversing the worldwide trend of degradation to our marine environments. Widder’s appearance is free and open to the public.

Week six of ArtOrg's the twelve-week Winter Concert Series features Neo-Beat/Dada poet and performance artist TED KING, word-smith and frontman for Opiate of the Masses and Dada Chacha, cult favorites in the Minneapolis jazz and hipster scene for many years, hooks up with some of the Cities' best players to create this new show: "Part Charles Bukowski, part Carl Jung, and a whole lot of something else. It's music, poetry, stand-up comedy, high risk over the line smart-ass stuff." Outside, original, fresh, jazzy and raw! Ted will be joined by the Medusahead Cabaret featuring Susan Thurston Hamerski, JoAnne Makela, Glen Bourdot, and Lucy Sweitzer and many others. Ted's Dada Chacha features Clint Hoover on harmonica and theremin, Bobby E. Ekstrand on guitar, and Stuart DeVaan (of Savage Aural Hotbed) on drums. In the living room of a New York apartment, a struggling writer/director (played by Northfield's Ryan Heinritz) holds a rehearsal of his new play, a "classic whodunit" in which all of the characters are named Butler. He hopes this play will bring him the success that keeps eluding him. The plot takes hilarious twists and turns that make actors and audience alike lose track of what is real until a bizarre and ironic ending sets matters straight.

The concert is the culminating event in a special symposium on “Being Cajun in the Early 21st Century” taking place February 21–23.
